The Team

Skippers

Dean J. Fox

Owner/Captain

Dean has been a Master of multiple commercial vessels for the last 15 years. He has gained extensive knowledge from operating these vessels here in Australia, New Zealand and Europe. During this time, he also lived, breathed and dove the expanse of coast off Brunswick, Byron Bay & Ballina. Over the years, Dean has gained invaluable local knowledge and unparalleled understanding of these waters and bar crossings.Falling in love with the ocean at a very young age, Dean grew up exploring local rock pools and diving the underwater playground he found so fascinating. He has a profound appreciation for this area and the ocean itself. Dean enjoys offering the opportunity to truly connect with the aquatic world and raise awareness of preservation aboard his vessel. He is very proud to live in such a beautiful part of the world and loves sharing incredible oceanic experiences with others. Dean states “I have turned my passion into a way of life.”

Michael Pride

Captain

Michael is one of the experienced skippers at Out of the Blue Adventures, now in his third whale watching season with the team. Born and raised in Lennox Head, he has a lifelong connection to the ocean and deep ties to the local area.
With over 11 years on the water, Michael’s maritime career has taken him from dive master work in Honduras to commercial fishing in Australia, skippering extended sports fishing charters along the Great Barrier Reef and through the Torres Strait. After starting a young family, he returned home to Lennox Head, where his focus shifted toward sharing and protecting the ocean for future generations.
Holding a Master <45 m qualification, Michael is known for his strong focus on safety, professionalism, and passenger comfort. His extensive experience and local knowledge help create unforgettable marine encounters, and he still loves the thrill of spotting the first whale of the day.

Alessandro Trombin

Captain

Alessandro, originally from Italy, has lived in Australia for several years. In his early twenties Al started sailing in the Adriatic Sea and Venetian lagoon in various size monohulls. Upon moving to Australia, where he fell in love with the underwater world, the next chapter involved becoming a Dive Guide at the prestine ‘Nguthungulli’ Julian Rocks Marine Park. A life-long learner with a curious attitude, and deep admirer of boats, Alessandro then embraced the path of a Skipper. With experience in beach launches and driving through busy well known surf-break ‘The Pass’ in Byron Bay, he has been lucky to learn from numerous highly experienced Skippers in the region, which gives him good knowledge on reading waves and the ocean. When he’s not driving boats, you’ll find him above the water sailing or underneath it diving with sea creatures. In Al’s words, “I’m so lucky and grateful to have found the ocean as my playground, where I can learn and keep growing.”
